2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick’s Message.

“How could we possibly appreciate the Mona Lisa if Leonardo had written at the bottom of the canvas, ‘The lady is smiling because she is hiding a secret from her lover’? This would shackle the viewer to reality, and I don’t want this to happen to 2001.” ~ Stanley Kubrick

Perhaps it was the psychedelic movement of the late 1960’s that saved Stanley Kubrick’s tale of first contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence from oblivion. The initial response to the film was polarized if not hostile, and at the box office it wasn’t a hit either. Rumor has it MGM, ready to pull the movie after a few weeks, was told by theater owners there’s more people coming to the screenings but those people were somewhat different – a young, pot smoking crowd. Essential epiphanies are unspoken of. They occur in the chasms between imagination and realness. Throw them into a cave of language, and they come undone. Every child has experienced the desperation when she tries to tell her dreams. She senses most of what she dreamed will remain arcane. In the end, she tells a story so she can at least share fragments of what really happened. Read more

Ultimately, the freedom of thoughts may become an obsolescent model. This is no science fiction, it’s fast evolving science fact¹. ‘Big Data’ will be the key to our minds, whereas the actual benefits for Jane and John Doe remain in the dark.
